WOLF HUNT was composed for the Pittsburgh Creators’ Project in June of 2021.
Elizabeth Pompa was born in 2002 and currently resides in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. As a child, she had a strong passion for music and wanted to learn everything at once. She was particularly drawn to video game music and started arranging it at the age of 14, Pompa started writing her own pieces for concert band. Elizabeth is finishing her Bachelor's in Composition for Media at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA.
During her undergraduate years, many of her works were premiered by the Duquesne University wind bands, including her piece CLEPSYDRA, which premiered at the District 1 West PMEA festival. Pompa's aspirations are to continue creating music that brings joy to listeners and performers alike.
It was a true honor to compose my second piece to be played and recorded with a fantastic opportunity by the Pittsburgh Creators’ Project. The Pittsburgh Creators’ Project hosts an amazing opportunity for local composers to get their pieces performed and recorded. I am genuinely thankful my Professor at Duquesne pushed me to write something for this. I had written many pieces that weren’t finished, which made me sit down and decide to write and finish a piece. To give this piece some narrative, WOLF HUNT is about a young wolf separated from its pack, learning to hunt and survive independently.
This piece is written at an intermediate level - an energetic and driven song-like melody. This piece is in D minor and starts with a freely played tenor sax solo representing the lone wolf on their own, about to start a journey. This theme in the solo tenor sax part is the central recurring theme of the wolf that can be heard all throughout the piece. Next, we have the woodwind choir to bring in the bittersweetness of a challenging journey ahead. The tempo changes, and we’re off to some challenging rhythmic ideas in the horns and lower winds. This piece has a galloping drive to it that makes it fun for intermediate students looking for a challenge while they are playing. This piece stays moving in the minor key, sprinkled with augmented and sweet major chords. WOLF HUNT has a sense of mystery, yet an epic element that brings the story to life. My goal was to make WOLF HUNT a fun and driving piece for anyone to play. I genuinely hope WOLF HUNT will create extraordinary learning opportunities for the conductor, musicians, and listeners.
The lone wolf can learn to survive on their own.
